What Is Dysport?

Dysport® is a purified form of botulinum toxin that has been shown to deliver temporary improvement in moderate to severe frown lines by blocking the signal from the nerve to the muscles, ultimately resulting in a reduction of muscle activity, temporarily preventing contraction of the muscles that cause frown lines and reducing the appearance of frown lines.

What Causes Frown Lines?

Frown lines are caused by a number of factors, and not always caused by age. Although age is a factor, over time, the muscles above and between the eyebrows repeatedly contract and tighten, during frowning or squinting, and this repeated movement forms lines between the eyebrows.

How Is Dysport Different From Botox?

As you would assume since they are both neuromodulators made with the botulinum toxin type A, Dysport® and Botox® are very similar. There are some subtle differences between them, however. That’s why Dr. Smith offers both for our patients from Lake Charles and the surrounding areas. Both use the same mechanism to relax facial muscles that are creating wrinkles. Dysport is diluted differently than Botox, so it takes more Dysport to achieve the same results as Botox, but the price is cheaper, so it equals out in the end. Dysport is made of smaller molecules compared to Botox. This allows Dysport to start working a day or so faster than Botox. It also allows Dysport to be spread to a larger area. But the smaller molecules also make Dysport more difficult to work with when treating smaller areas. There is some thinking that Dysport lasts one month longer than Botox in some patients, but this has not been proven clinically.

How Long Do Dysport Results Last?

Dysport lasts about 3-6 months

How Often Should I Receive Dysport Injections?

Differences in individual patient metabolism can affect the duration of your results. At some point, your body will absorb the now-inert botulinum toxin and the injected muscles will begin to contract again. When this happens, your wrinkles will return on the surface skin. For most patients, Dysport® erases wrinkles for about 4 months. That would be the approximate timeframe to expect to schedule another session to maintain your results.

What Should I Avoid Doing After Having My Dysport Injections?

You can get right back to work or your other normal activities immediately following your session with Dr. Smith. The only thing you need to avoid is rubbing your injection sites for the first 24 hours. This can make the Dysport migrate to an unintended muscle.

What Are The Side Effects With Dysport?

Since its FDA approval in 2009 Dysport® has proven to be highly effective and safe. The main risks or side effects with Dysport® are slight redness and swelling at the injection sites. This usually resolves within the first day. Some patients can develop a headache for a day or so after their injections.

The main risk with Dysport® (or Botox for that matter) is having it injected by an inexperienced injector.

That’s because if Dysport is injected into an incorrect muscle it can create problems such as a drooping eyelid. This is why you need to trust these injections to a board-certified dermatologist with extensive knowledge of facial anatomy like Dr. Smith. She has the training and experience using both Dysport® and Botox® to ensure you’ll love your results.

Will My Results With Dysport Look Natural?

Rather than simply fill in an area, as dermal fillers do, Dysport® relaxes the muscles that are contracting and creating wrinkles on the surface skin. By knowing exactly which muscles need to be targeted, Dr. Smith creates really natural-looking results. This is why patients need to carefully choose the injector for neuromodulators such as Dysport® and Botox®. When getting injections at nail salons or day spas, the injectors may not have the necessary knowledge of facial anatomy, and they can inject into an adjacent muscle. This can create issues such as a droopy eyelid or a look of perpetual surprise. That’s not the case with Dr. Smith, thanks to her extensive training and experience as a board-certified dermatologist.

How Long Does It Take For Dysport To Work?

Effects of Dysport can be seen in as little as 3 days, but generally the final result will be at about 10 days.

Where Can Dysport Be Injected?

The most common places for the injection of neurotoxin are Glabella Crease (between the brows), lateral forehead lines and around the eyes (crowsfeet).
